Um Ali is translated as Ali’s mother. This delicious dessert is named after an Arabian ruler’s wife who used to make this dessert for her family.
Um Ali is a traditional sweet bread pudding made with crunchy pastry, sugar, milk, cream, nuts, and raisins. There are some optional spices in this Arabian dessert recipe like cinnamon, saffron, and cardamom, by which you can add super heavy flavors to your Um Ali.
Um Ali is sweet, creamy, and milky, with a delightful and comforting mixture of textures: the crunchy puff pastry chunks, the nuts, the soft, creamy middle of the soaked pastry, and the heated cream topping. It’s a crowd-pleasing dessert to make, and it smells amazing.
Begin making this perfect Arabian desert by preheating the oven to 390°F (200°C). Arrange the puff pastry pieces on a baking sheet in a single layer. Brush the pastry pieces with softened butter evenly and sprinkle some sugar on top of them. Let the oven be warm enough and bake the Um Ali pastry for 20-25 minutes until it turns golden brown. Let it cool on the counter after removing it from the oven.
Add the heavy whipping cream to a mixer bowl and whip the cold cream for a few minutes. Then add the vanilla extract, sugar, and beat the mixture at medium-high speed until soft peaks form. You want it to be fluffy and silky. Set your Um Ali cream topping aside.
Place a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the Full-Fat Milk and sugar to it. Stir the mixture until sugar dissolves. Bring it to a boil. Once the mixture boils, remove it from the heat.
Break about ¾ of the baked puff pastry into chunks and scatter them on the bottom of a 9X13 inch (33 x 23 cm) pan. Add the cashews, pistachios, dried coconut, and golden raisins by sprinkling them evenly over the surface. Pour the hot milk mixture on top.
Now break the rest of the puff pastry and scatter the pieces on the top of the Um Ali dessert evenly. Spread the whipped cream on the pastry chunks.
Set the oven on broil function at the same temperature as before. Place the fabulous Um Ali in the middle rack of the oven and broil your Arabian dessert for 10 minutes until it turns golden brown and bubbly. Remove it from the oven.
Sprinkle with additional pistachio if desired. Serve this gorgeous, delicious, and healthy Arabian dessert warm, sided with a cup of hot tea. Enjoy!
