Some foods have you wondering “why should anyone go through all the trouble to make this?” and the answer is simple: It is the joy that comes at the end that makes it all worth it. Steak Pie is a classic British food served in many places in the UK. Making this pie is challenging for sure, but when you get to taste pieces of steak and the buttery crust of the pie, you will realize it is definitely worth the effort.
Put the porcini mushrooms in boiling water for 20 minutes. Squeeze them out, but keep the water.
Preheat the oven to 160°C. Use a large dish to heat one tablespoon vegetable oil. Cook large pieces of braising steak until they are brown. Then, set them aside.
Add the onions and carrots to the pan. Use a little bit of vegetable oil to cook them on low heat for 5 minutes.
Add the soaked mushrooms and cook for another minute. Sprinkle over the sugar and plain flour. Keep stirring until the flour becomes brown.
Put the braising steak and juices back into the pan and stir.
Pour the non-alcoholic beer, stock cubes mixed with boiling water, and the liquid from the mushrooms.
Season the mixture and slide in a small bundle of thyme, bay leaf, and parsley tied together. Gently boil everything.
Put on the lid and place in the oven for 2 hours until the steak becomes tender.
As the stew is cooking in the oven, use a frying pan to heat one more drop of vegetable oil and fry the smoked turkey bacon for 3 minutes until they become crispy.
turn up the heat and add the chestnut mushrooms and cook until they become golden (4 minutes). Turn off the heat and put them through after the stew is cooked. Let everything cool down.
To make the pastry, mix 650 grams of plain flour, cold Irish Butter, and sea salt. Add cold water to make a dough. You can use a food processor for this if you want.
After you knead the pastry, put it in a plastic wrap and place it in the fridge for at least 1 hour.
Heat the oven to 220°C to make the pie. Put a baking tray in the oven. Generously grease a pie dish and sprinkle some flour.
Put one-third of the pastry aside. Roll out the rest in the pie dish with relatively thick rounds. Then, line your tin.
Use a slotted spoon to add the steak to the dish. Using a slotted spoon is important as you don’t want too much gravy in the pie.
The edges need to be trimmed. Use the trimmings to make decorations. Generously brush the top with egg and make a few small cuts in the center.
Put it on the baking tray and bake until it becomes golden (40 minutes). Leave the pie to cool down for 10 minutes as you heat the leftover gravy. You can now enjoy the Steak Pie!
Using porcini mushrooms is optional, but it is recommended as they are really tasty.
It is better to make the filling in advance and keep it in the fridge.
The pastry can also be made in advance and kept in the fridge. The pie will taste better if you add a cold filling.
You can serve steak pie with pea and chips.
