Making this Italian stromboli is easy and straightforward. It is like a savory pizza rolled into an Italian sandwich. The homemade stromboli dough will highlight its fresh and hearty taste to most. Stromboli pieces are also known as pinwheel bread rolls. They are a surprisingly delicious treats for a busy weekend. 

Instructions

Step 1

Combine the dry yeast, sugar, and warm water. Let the mixture stand for ten minutes. Add the all-purpose flour and salt in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the hook attachment. Stir just to combine them. Set the mixer running on low, then pour the yeast mixture and olive oil into the bowl. Continue mixing until everything is fully incorporated, and start to clump and form a dough. Remove the dough from the bowl.

Step 2

Knead it on the work surface if needed. Grease a large bowl with olive oil, and place the ball-shaped dough in it. Cover with plastic wrap and place it in a warm place and let it rise for an hour. Once the dough has rested and doubled in size, place it on a lightly floured surface, and stretch it with a rolling pin. Shape the dough into a 17X20 inch rectangle.

Step 3

Preheat the oven to 400 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spray with cooking spray. Set aside.

Step 4

Use your fingertips to create dents on the dough and press it evenly. Spoon about one cup of the marinara sauce over the top of the stretched dough. Leave about an inch border all around the dough. Then sprinkle the Kalleh Salami processed cheeseKalleh mozzarella cheese, Kalleh parmesan cheese (reserve about two tablespoons), and one tablespoon of the diced fresh basil. Top that with salami slices. Arrange them perfectly.

Step 5

Use a fork to beat the egg in a small bowl with one tablespoon of water. With a pastry brush, coat the edges of the  Italian stromboli. Now, starting at the long end, gently roll up the dough like a cinnamon roll or swirl style. Put the stromboli on the prepared baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush it with remaining egg wash, sprinkle with the reserved parmesan cheese, and fresh basil leaves if desired.

Step 6

Place the stromboli in the preheated oven, and bake it for 25-30 minutes, or until it is lightly brown and cooked through. Remove from the heat, and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Your Italian stromboli is ready, use a serrated knife to slice them into perfect pieces. Serve it on a fancy plate sided with marinara dip and green salad. Enjoy!

Cooking Notes

This is a terrific homemade recipe for a marinara sauce with an incredible taste. In a saucepan, heat two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil till it is simmering. Now add one minced red onion. When the onion is softened and translucent, add three crushed cloves of garlic and cook it until it is fragrant. Now add 1 and a half cup peeled tomatoes, one teaspoon oregano, one tablespoon tomato paste, two tablespoons of sugar, and stir them frequently. Let the sauce simmer for 15 minutes on medium flame, then add the chopped fresh basils and remove from the heat.
