  • 3/4 to 1cup (96 grams/ 3.38 ounces) slightly warm water
  • 2tablespoons Kalleh dairy butter (at room temperature)
  • 1large egg
  • 3 1/2cups (448 grams/ around 16 ounces)all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup (57grams/ 2 ounces)sugar
  • 1 1/4teaspoons salt
  • 1tablespoon instant yeast

The best way to make the most delicious hamburger is to prepare all the items at home. Homemade burger buns are fluffy and tasty and you can use them for burgers, sandwiches, and sliders. Forget about those dry and dull burger buns at the grocery with different types of additives.

There are different instructions to make burger buns you can make them with or without active yeast or egg. Make it your own challenge and try baking burger buns with different ingredients, until you finally find your favorite. Or you can customize your own bread by brushing warm butter and adding some sesame or sunflower seeds for toppings. Let’s start making the bread dough!


Step 1

Pick a large bowl. Mix all of the ingredients and whisk together until well combined. You can do it by hand or mixer, no difference. You should eventually have a smooth dough paste.

Step 2

Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and leave it in a warm place for 1 to 2 hours (you can put the bowl in your oven with the light on). Let the dough rise until it’s mostly doubled in bulk.

Step 3

Slowly turn the bowl and put the dough on a floured surface. Divide it evenly into 8 pieces. Shape each piece into a ball. To properly form your buns, you should pull the dough gently and tuck it under with your fingertips. Place the buns on a greased baking sheet (or lined with parchment paper). The buns should be ½ inch apart from each other. Cover the baking sheet, leave it for 45 minutes to an hour. The buns will go puffy.

Step 4

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Brush the buns lightly with half of the melted Kalleh dairy butter and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Step 5

Put the baking sheet in the oven for 15 to 18 minutes, until golden on top. For making your buns shinier, you can brush them with the remaining melted butter after you remove them from the oven.
Now your homemade burger buns are ready. You can keep them in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Cooking Notes

Gently press down on the tops of the buns 2-3 times while buns are rising (don’t push so hard). This will help them to expand outward instead of up. A perfect hamburger bun shape!

For preparing a soft dough, you better use a smaller amount of water in summer or in humid air, and a greater amount of water in winter or in dry air. 

When you brush the buns with melted butter, it will give them a light golden crust. But if you brush the buns with an egg white and water, it will give them a darker crust. 

Brushing the buns with the beaten egg will make the sesame or sunflower seeds adhere. 

The important tip about yeast: There is a difference between active dry yeast and instant yeast and there is a major difference in how you use them. When you use active dry yeast, you must dissolve it in warm water before using it. However, you can mix the instant yeast right into your other dry ingredients.
