Meatloaf is a dish made of ground meat mixed with other ingredients and shaped into a loaf before being fried or smoked. You can hand-form the final shape on a baking tray or pan-form it by frying in a loaf pan.

It’s typically made with ground beef, but it can also be made with ground lamb, pork, veal, venison, fish, and seafood, often in combination. This delicious food can be rendered vegetarian by using imitation meat or pulses.

In the American style, it is topped with tomato ketchup and a sprig of parsley. Specific servings can be made by slicing the cooked meatloaf like a loaf of bread. It can quickly become dry, but there are a variety of methods for keeping it moist, such as mixing in bread crumbs and egg, coating it with sauce, wrapping it, or filling it with moisture-enhancing items, such as fatty meats, rich cheese, or vegetables.

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 375°F and line a 9”x5” loaf pan with parchment paper.

Step 2

Combine all of the meatloaf ingredients in a big mixing bowl. To mix, whisk all together thoroughly. be careful not to overmix. Add the meat to the loaf pan, carefully press it down and shape it uniformly, and bake for 40 minutes at 375°F (180°C).

Step 3

To make the sauce, combine all of the ingredients in a small dish. Take the meatloaf to the oven and bake for an extra 15-20 minutes. Allow the meatloaf to rest for 10 minutes before cutting. Drizzle with the pan’s baking juices and serve.

Cooking Notes

Prepare meatloaf according to directions to freeze. Freeze tightly wrapped in plastic wrap and foil.

Bake meatloaf on a baking sheet for crispier sides. Make a self-made pan with sides out of foil to catch the drippings from the meatloaf as it bakes. Form the meatloaf into a loaf and wrap it in foil. Carry on with the baking directions. Remember: Depending on the form and thickness of the meatloaf, the baking time can differ somewhat.

If you use lean meat, don’t worry; the majority of the ingredients will make the meatloaf moist and juicy. Avoid meats that are so lean.
